Tips on not getting sick before your trip

Have you ever wondered why you always catch a cold while you are on an overseas trip? Sometimes it’s hard to get a good night sleep the day before your trip due to all the excitement in your head, and you even tried to fool your body to rest early for an early flight the next day.

You finally hopped on board, and you are stuck with a passenger coughing next to you (Yes it happens very often), the chance of you catching their cough, cold or flu is very high. The bug starts to hit you once you land, and because you want to enjoy your trip, you overindulge yourself with all the food and drinks and late night sleep. Your immune system is now weakened, then your body takes a huge toll…..

Being sick while on vacation happened to me several times before, and yes, it happened while I was in Europe for my honeymoon. My wife and I checked into Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa, one of the best and most luxurious hotels in Interlaken. We were on a tour, and I think the hotel staff mistakenly gave one of the couples in our tour the wrong room, and that couple didn’t want to stay in that room simply because the room was too big. We were happy to switch our room with them by their request (Pictures of our big room below).

Deluxe Duplex Suite Floor Plan, Image from

Deluxe Duplex Suite (70 sqm / 753 sq ft), price for this room for a night when we stayed in April was 2171 CHF (Roughly $2200 USD, and our price was much cheaper since we were with a tour).

After a late night supper with some alcohol, I jumped into the spa and went to bed around 2:00 AM. Now here comes the hard part, I was feeling ill when I woke up in the middle of the night, my body was shivering when we were on our way to the Alps after breakfast. People in the same tour were able to tell I was having a fever, and some even offered me tablets that reduce fever. I felt so horrible for most of that day, and I was telling myself that I don’t want to go through something similar ever again.

So what can we do to prevent such an uncomfortable feeling? My advise for you, try to relax as much as you can a week before the trip, and try to get some proper sleep each day during the trip. Drink lots of water, and if you really need to, bring some cold & flu tables with you, or go to the nearest chemist when you are there. Stay safe and good luck!

2019/7/28, on a plane to Taiwan from Sendai. I took 3 packs of these medicines each day for 5 days, I just couldn’t afford to be sick in bed during the trip, and this medicine was keeping me alive each day.
